WHO SHOULD PARTICIPATE: COOs, CNOs, DONs, accreditation coordinators, risk managers, hospital plant managers and engineers, safety officers, security managers, quality and performance improvement directors, infection control practitioners, biomedical engineers, directors of buildings and grounds, compliance officers, fire safety professionals, administrative, and clinical staff who are responsible for or manager others with Environment of Care and Life Safety responsibilities
OVERVIEW: This one-day educational program will provide valuable information for those responsible for managing the Emergency Management, Environment of Care, and Life Safety programs within their health facilities, as well as those who must understand Joint Commission surveys and recent changes to the standards. Information will be provided so attendees can implement a practical, continuously compliant program to achieve maximum performance while effectively preparing for Joint Commission and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) surveys. Attendees will also receive guidance to understand and interpret the most serious deficiencies commonly found in surveys in these areas. Sufficient time will be provided for questions and discussion.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:
- Identify the organizational structure of the Joint Commission’s Environment of Care, Life Safety, and Emergency Management Standards for Healthcare;
- Explain requirements for the workplace violence standard;
- Articulate the focus areas of the environment of care and life safety standards, including document reviews and surveys of the healthcare facilities;
- Identify strategies to correct deficiencies related to environment of care and life safety standards;
- Explain structural modifications of behavioral health units to reduce ligature risks; and
- Identify deficiencies from hospital photos and use that insight to identify accreditation issues at their own hospitals during internal safety surveys.
MEET YOUR FACULTY: Ernest E. Allen, ARM, CSP, CPHRM, CHFM
Ernest Allen has received his associate in risk management and Certified Safety Professional certification in Safety Management. He is a Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management, and a Certified Healthcare Facility Manager. He has a bachelor’s degree in safety from the University of Central Missouri. Allen has experience as the safety/security director of a 500 bed Cleveland hospital and Joint Commission Life Safety surveyor, as well as in the insurance industry at OHIC and The Doctors Company. He was a technical committee member of NFPA 110 on Emergency Power, which includes installation, testing, and maintenance of emergency generators. He is now a Life Safety consultant surveying hospitals across the country to help them prepare for Joint Commission and CMS Surveys.
CONTINUING EDUCATION:
Nursing: 6.0 contact hours will be awarded for this offering by the Louisiana Hospital Association for complete attendance of the program. The Louisiana Hospital Association is approved by the Louisiana State Board of Nursing – CE Provider #39.
